Who doesn’t love Las Vegas? Whether it is the bright lights, the fun attractions, or the chance to change your life and win big with a roll of the dice, there is truly something for everyone. Still, while everyone wants to go, some worry that Sin City is too expensive.

Well, worry no more! While Vegas and budget travel don’t always go hand-in-hand, it can be done with some smart budgeting and creative spending. If you want to see everything this flashy city has to offer, heed these money-saving tips.

Budget for the Basics

Regardless of how much money they have to spend, the most responsible travelers create a budget before they spend a dime so they can ensure that they do not let any cash go to waste. There is so much to see and do in Las Vegas that it can be very easy to go overboard and return home penniless, so sit down with your travel group and plan out what you will do and what you plan to spend. Speaking of groups, the more friends you bring, the less it will cost individually for the services you require, so keep that in mind.

When it comes to the hotel, there are several options right on the strip that offer affordable rates, including Harrah’s, LINQ, the Flamingo, and Bally’s. When looking for discounts, you can try travel sites or join the mailing lists of Vegas hotels, as they often send out deals and coupons to their members. If you are feeling nostalgic, you can also stay in downtown Las Vegas. While the hotels there might not be as flashy, they are more affordable, and there is plenty to see and do while you’re there.

Vegas is also very well known for its food and the expansive buffets, but although many offer all you can eat, they can be quite pricey. Instead of just walking into the first restaurant you see, do some research, refer to your budget to see what you can afford, and keep a lookout for deals. You can even save money here and there by packing sandwiches for lunch, skipping the appetizer and dessert during dinner, and staying at a hotel that serves free breakfast.

Affordable Travel

The first travel cost that you will need to consider is how you plan to get to Vegas in the first place, and you can save money depending on what you choose. If you live thousands of miles away, then you will likely have to take a plane. You can save money on the flight and hotel by booking during the middle of the week and by taking early morning and late-night flights. If you live closer, a road trip might be a fun way to go. If it fits the budget, take an RV which will also supply you with free lodging!

Once you’re there, you may be tempted to rent a car, but it will take a chunk out of your budget, and you may not have to travel too much, so consider alternative forms of transportation. Las Vegas offers several methods of getting around the four-mile strip including a monorail that leaves every four to eight minutes and a double-decker bus called the Deuce which stops at every hotel. There are also tons of taxis to go around, along with Lyft and Uber.

If you want to save money and add a little adventure, then you might consider riding a bike where you need to go. The city has recently set up a bicycle sharing program where you can rent and return a bike at one of 20 stations. The rentals are as low as $4, and you won’t have to worry about gas.

Entertainment

While the vivid glow and flashing lights of Las Vegas are incredibly intoxicating, and there is a lot to see and do, sticking to your budget is paramount — especially if you plan on gambling. Set limits for the amount of money you want to spend each day on gambling expenses, and do not go over your budget. If you plan to spend $50 a day on the slot machines, then stick to it. If you are into table games like poker, remember that you will experience ups and downs, but don’t let it get to you. Just have fun and quit when you’re ahead if you can, but don’t spend more than your allowance.

During a much-deserved gambling break, you can check out some of the great shows and concerts that the city has to offer and you can save money by purchasing discounted tickets online. You can also save money for the shows by planning ahead and booking online. Also, ask your hotel if they offer cheaper tickets. Of course, there is also the free shows and displays such as the fountains at the Bellagio and the free concerts down at Fremont Street.

Of course, when it comes to Las Vegas on a budget, the word “free” is your best friend, and there is a ton of other free stuff to do on the strip. There is so much to see and photograph, whether it is the famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign or the flamingo wildlife habitat at the Flamingo hotel. Also, remember that most casinos will hand out free drinks either while you gamble or watch a friend, and it might only cost you a decent tip.

Las Vegas is a playground where you could stay for weeks and weeks without getting bored. Just remember to spend in moderation, and you could have the trip of your dreams without breaking the bank.
