Ciara & Russell: When Talking About Relationships, Is There A Fine Line?

Entertainer Ciara and her new man, Russell Wilson, have been criticized lately over some comments made by Wilson about their relationship.

At first, I wasn’t going to watch Wilson’s interview but a few days after the story broke, I finally watched the interview. Immediately, I was concerned and turned off by Wilson’s statements. Before the interview, he had hardly said anything – if anything – abut his relationship with Ciara. Then, in this interview, the 26-year-old decided to tell the world about their sex life…. or lack thereof.

In an hour-long conversation with the pastor of Rock Church, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback talked about why he and Ciara have decided to remain celibate: “For me, I knew that God had brought me in her life to bless her and for her to bless me. We’re not going to be perfect, by any means. But He’s anointed both of us and He’s calling for us to do something special.”

Wilson also talked about how God had spoken to him, saying He needed him to “lead her.” This gave me pause. I couldn’t help but question: Why would God not tell Ciara to follow? The answer to this question is of course is clear: nobody really knows because Ciara hasn’t really said much about the decision and it speaks volumes.

From what reports indicate, she did make a statement on it while being interviewed for Us Weekly’s Loose Talk, saying they have and will continue to abstain from sex – even if it is challenging.

“You go one day at a time and keep [the romance] going with each other,” Ciara. “And I’m really enjoying every day that we’re sharing.”

Talking about your relationship or sharing your religious beliefs/ spirituality is never a negative. But, I’m left to wonder why Wilson felt compelled to share something so personal, while Ciara hasn’t really said much. What does Wilson truly gain from telling this information to the world?

There is no denying that Ciara is physically beautiful and it’s unfortunate that she – like many entertainers – is considered a sex symbol. And for that matter, there’s no denying that Wilson is physically handsome – and like many – is also consider a sex symbol.

So some might ask: Why aren’t they even more public about their relationship? Many are already interested in both of equally, let alone what’s going on between the two of them.

But at the end of the day, what goes on in Wilson and Ciara’s bedroom should be between the two of them. Moreover, from a Biblical Christian perspective, God would tell Ciara to follow and Wilson to lead, especially once they are married.

Still, this whole conversation does address topics that I think the church has been notoriously quiet on, which is sex and sexuality. The church’s silence on sex and sexuality has created a sense of taboo surrounding the topics. This silence has created many difficult situations, which have affected Christians in tremendous ways.

I think that when sex and sexuality are not discussed it means there is a breeding ground for teenage pregnancies, molestation, rape sexual abuse, and sexually transmitted infections. This is not to say that Christians are the only ones who experience these issues. But when the Church is silent on these issues, those who experience these issues are sometimes unaware of preventative measures and where to seek support.

And it’s not just those aspects of sex and sexuality that the Church has been quiet on. It has also been silent on sex in marital relationships as well.

Although there are serious issues with Wilson just offering up such private information about his relationship with Ciara, it does allow for serious dialogue to occur that has been lacking in the Christian community.
