Are you planning your next career steps as you head into Q4? (You should be!) This week, I want to break down a key habit of people who get promoted.
The truth is that most of us won’t stay satisfied in our job unless we know there is opportunity for growth. The kicker? The burden falls on you to demonstrate your readiness for those opportunities.
It’s not enough to smash your deliverables each week. You also need to take it upon yourself to keep learning.
Let me break this down.
Anticipate, anticipate, anticipate.
You probably know what “talent planning” is for your organization, but do you apply this concept to your career? As your organization grows, its talent needs and skill requirements will change over time. If you want to put yourself in the best position for a promotion, you need to anticipate your company’s needs and have those new skills ready.
For example:
Say you work in software development. For you, it’s a good idea to keep learning the latest coding languages. That way you’ll be one of the first people in your organization up-to-date on the newest possibilities. (Just think: this would have come in handy in the 2000s when app software suddenly exploded. Who knows what’s next?)
By anticipating the future needs of your company, and by taking the initiative to learn new skills, you can position you for a leadership role.
Right now you’re probably thinking: I don’t have time!
That’s okay. This isn’t something you necessarily need to do on a daily basis. A better strategy? Look for conferences or seminars in your interest area, and plan to attend once a month (or every other month).
YOUR CHALLENGE:
Give this a try. Take 15 minutes today to research learning opportunities in your organization or in your community. Is there a leadership conference coming up? A seminar you’d really like to attend? The opportunity to hear from a thought leader in your industry? Find out! And make a plan to get yourself in the room.
Stay up to date on what’s happening in your field, and start positioning yourself for that promotion.
We’ll have more advice for you going forward. In the meantime, feel free to shoot me your thoughts and tips. I love to hear from you!

Alli
