I have come to realize my limitations.
This process has not been fun. It’s not an oh-so wonderful feeling to come to grips with your limitations, but they’re true and I have to face the facts. I’m sure you can agree that we all have to face the facts sometimes with on what we are and are not capable of doing. Knowing our limitations allows us to not only stress less, but also to enjoy life a little more.
Here are four notions that I would like to share with you about what my recent encounters with limitations have taught me:
1. We have no control, so just embrace it.
I can’t control my situations. You can’t always control your situations. We can’t control our lives. We can’t control how people treat us. We can’t control the economy. All we can do is do our best and make the most of what life brings us. Sometimes things work out, and sometimes they don’t. But we have to always believe, stay positive, do our best, and enjoy every bit of this journey called life.
2. “Things will happen in your life that you can’t stop… But that’s no reason to shut out the world… There’s a purpose for the good and for the bad…”
These existential words are not mine, but from the 1995 hit movie, Now and Then. For me and my friends, that was one of our favorite movies growing up. In the movie, after the words were said by one of the older characters, the narrator says that words meant more to her as she got older. I can now relate to that. I have realized that things do happen in life and I can’t let what I can’t do, stop me from moving forward with my life. I have to accept things, still see the good that exists in the world, and know that everything is working out for my good. It has always done so.
3. Faith in God is everything.
For me, He means everything. I could care less what the world says or thinks about God. He has seen me through my worst moments and He has allowed to me to gain a deeper relationship with Him. When I’ve faced limitations, He has open doors that no person can shut. Conversely, he has also closed doors that no man can open, but He has always had something better in store. By opening my eyes to my limitations, He has also opened my eyes to the fact that He has none. He has His very own timing and capabilities on anything and everything. Those are His specialities.
4. It’s a gift to embrace being human.
And finally, one of the hardest things that I have dealt with in my life is being human. I hate having to go through trials, I hate limitations, I hate heartache, etc. etc. But through experiencing various limitations and overcoming those moments, I have also experienced and began to embrace the beautiful gift of being human…of not being perfect, having flaws, and dealing with life. All of these things have made me a better person and I believe they will also help me to help others going through similar situations.
