Ah, the Grammys, a fight for the best awards in music right on your own television. While of course, we watch award shows to see who is going to take home gold and who is going to strike out, we have to admit that it’s really the sideline dramas, entertaining moments, and absolute failures that keep us coming back. I mean who can forget the La La Land vs Moonlight fiasco of the 2017 Oscars?
Of course, throwing hundreds of celebrities into a room together and broadcasting them live is a recipe for both disaster and hilarity, with a splash of entertainment, and the Grammys this year was no exception. If you missed the show last night you missed some wild and powerful moments, but we’ve got you covered with all the highlights.
Kesha Gives the Performance of a Lifetime
The shining moment of the show this year was singer Kesha’s performance. Now unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you’ve most likely not only heard about Kesha’s lawsuit against her former producer, Dr. Luke, but also witnessed her sensational return to the industry with the release of her new album, Rainbow. To celebrate overcoming the obstacles she faced and shed light on the “Time’s Up” movement, Kesha belted out her single Praying with singers, Cindi Lauper, Camila Cabello, Julia Michaels, Andra Day, and Bebe Rexha. The performance was nothing short of awe-inspiring, and it brought a desperately needed message to the show.
Blue Ivy Shows Some Attitude
One of the more entertaining moments of this year’s Grammys was a quick shot of the singers Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy, shutting down her parent’s applause during Camila Cabello’s speech. While some people are saying she was just embarrassed by her parents, others are saying this was a snub at the singer speech. However, since she’s only six years old, it’s unlikely she had any deep opinions on the matter. Either way, it was very entertaining and quickly became an obvious highlight of the Grammys.
Celebrities Read Trump Novel
In another hilarious move, a wide range of celebrities showed up and auditioned to narrate “Fire and Fury,” a political novel on Trump’s first 100 days in office. The most notable of these celebrities being Trump’s political rival, Hillary Clinton. The expose highlighted his love of McDonald’s and immature behavior during meetings with world leaders. It’s fair to say that if the President was tuning into the show, he did not walk away pleased.
Now, we couldn’t really be giving you a summary of the 60th Grammys if we didn’t talk about who took home the awards themselves. There were a lot of surprises throughout the night on this end, most notably with Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran, and for very different reasons.
Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran Win Big
Bruno Mars, in a move many didn’t see coming, was crowned king of the Grammys as he swept up not one, not two, but six total Grammys, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. His wins, while they caused some confusion among viewers, received nowhere near the anger that Best Pop Song winner, Ed Sheeran did, who was actually booed (though he wasn’t there to hear it). Facing three female nominees, his win has faced incredibly negative backlash, and many are criticizing the show for snubbing so many female artists (only one walked away with a Grammy) while promoting gender equality.
Of course, what would an awards show be without disputed wins and some heavy drama? And after this action-packed show, we can only wonder what surprises the Oscars have in store for us in March…
