There’s one big, important thing you need to do this week: listen to your company’s earnings statement.
Why is this so important?
We’re at the beginning stages of the largest market disruption in modern history. For many of us, this has meant instability, uncertainty and fear (I feel it too).
But in this climate, there are important actions we can and should take in order to protect our careers and find new growth opportunities.
Your company recently released its Q1 earnings statement. This is where you can find out how your organization and department have been impacted lately. Why does this matter to you (besides the obvious)?
It’s no longer enough to be an expert in your role.
In order to protect your career and find new pockets of opportunity, you also need to be an expert in your company and industry.
Take the same care and thought that you apply to your “job” and apply it to your future.
Here’s where you can start this week.
Evaluate the health of your organization by tuning into your quarterly earnings report. As you look over the Q1 statements, ask these questions:
- How is your business unit faring within your larger organization?
- What parts of the organization are growing to meet new market demands? (Where is there opportunity?)
- What pieces of business are stagnating or losing revenue? (And do you know why?)
- Does your company have enough assets to carry them through in this hard time, or will they need budget cuts?
Not sure how to answer these questions? The Forem is hosting a live online workshop to teach you the critical components of an earnings statement.
Because The Forem currently has many members from Google & Verizon, I’ll be using both Verizon’s and Alphabet’s Q1 statements as examples. We’ll compare the businesses against each other and highlight what you should pay attention to.

Right now, you want to look at everything you do through the lens of the current economic situation.
This uncertain climate can be your opportunity to shine and position yourself for that dream project, role, or promotion. Go seize it.
