Perhaps you’ve decided on Baltimore as your next holiday destination, or maybe you’re just passing through on your travels. Whatever the reason for your visit, there’s plenty that Baltimore has to offer to the intrepid traveler. Be it a day at their famous aquarium, an evening cheering on the football team, or just some of the most delicious grub imaginable, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re into effort-free travel plans, then take our advice… you won’t regret it.

Eat at Ekiben

Enjoy a freshly steamed Bao bun at Ekiben.Amber Wolfe

The best way to start off any adventure is with a good square meal. One of the best places to get just that is Ekiben. This tiny restaurant is a favorite with locals, and for good reason. The food here is inventive, cheap and really, really delicious.

Upon entering Ekiben you’ll be hit with just how popular this joint is. At the busiest times it genuinely is standing room only. Steamed bun sandwiches are the order of the day; a clever and accessible way of mixing Asian fusion flavors with the more familiar tastes of the American palate. The Original Bun is your best starting point. The fluffy steamed bun comes packed with Thai style chicken balls, doused in a creamy coconut and black pepper sauce. Homemade coleslaw adds crunch and vibrancy, and the dish is finished off with a handful of fresh herbs.

As well as buns you can also choose to pick up a healthy ‘bowl’ (or indeed box if you’re taking away). These are packed with crunchy veggies and topped with the same options as the buns, with one exception – the Tackle Box. This bowl is an earthy amalgamation of fried catfish, roasted garlic and carefully selected herbs. The flavors are punchy and bold and will leave you plenty full enough, but still hankering for another.

Catch Some Football at the M&T Bank Stadium

Sports fans should be sure to make their way to the M&T Bank Stadium at some point during their stay. This stadium is home to the Baltimore Ravens, who are performing well in the NFL at the moment, having won their last eight games and covered in five of the last six. Whilst it’s great fun to watch a game of football, even if your team aren’t at their best, it’s so much better when the players are on top form – even more of a reason to check it out. The ticket prices here are surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you don’t mind sitting a little further back in the stands, so there’s no excuse not to head over there.

Visit the National Aquarium

Although this is exactly the kind of tip that it doesn’t take a great detective to sniff out, the National Aquarium in Baltimore is simply a must visit. Having been open since 1981, this aquarium has always been ranked right up there with the nation’s most valuable attractions. It has played host to more than 50 million people since its opening, but despite its credentials as a fantastic attraction, it has never lost sight of its mission; to inspire conservation. The aquarium is home to some 20,000 permanent inhabitants, who are all beautifully housed in the exhibits.

As well as these guys, the aquarium also plays host to animals that require rehabilitation before returning to the wild. They have had particular success with their reintroduction of endangered sea turtles and continue to fund research for this through their profits. Whilst it’s worth visiting at any time at all, if you’re lucky enough to be in Baltimore on a Friday evening, then be sure to take up the half price ticket offer. It means that you can see all of the incredible exhibits and still have some change to spend in the gift shop.

Get Outside at the Howard Peter Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens

Baltimore is famous for its green spaces, boasting sights as spectacular as Sherwood Gardens and Cylburn Arboretum. However, one equally beautiful and much less crowded place is the Howard Peters Rawlings gardens. Make your way to Druid Hill Park and marvel at the wonders inside the glistening glass house. There are five different and distinct areas within the conservatory, each catering to a different type of flora. Once you’re finished inside the conservatory you can picnic in the grounds. Outside the conservatory is laid to lawn and surrounded by beautifully kept flowerbeds which attract bees and butterflies, a beautiful place to sit on a sunny day.
