We’ve all heard that saying.
You know, the one that goes like this: “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.”
I heard this constantly as a little kid.
To be honest with you, it often got on my nerves. I knew my morals. I knew what I believed, so I didn’t understand why all of the adults around me would remind my friends and me about this –all the time. I mean we weren’t bad kids. The majority of us were trying to lead good lives and wanted to really do something with our lives.
But looking back, I know now where they were coming from. I believe it could be that they knew all of the things that we would encounter throughout our lives. They knew of the things that might cause us to lose sight of what it means to stand for something. They knew of the things that could cause us to be complacent. They must have known about all of the things that could somehow make us lose sight of the dreams that we believed in.
Thinking about this now, I believe these immortal words actually hit home on addressing the type of lives that we all wish to lead. I mean, who is it that we are going to decide to be? Will we allow others to determine who we are and what we will accomplish in our lives? And what is it that we really stand for and want to be known for?
For me, when I think about that saying, I believe that instead of just allowing things to be the way that they are, we need to begin to come to grips with the fact that our lives do not go on forever.
We are only given so much time to do something…to make some type of dent in the universe. And so, just like how an athlete prepares for a big race, we need to prepare and start running towards truly living what we believe. We need to stop allowing the world and other people to decide who it is that we are going to be and what it is that we are going to do.
We need to take a stand. After all, it’s our lives.
If we don’t, then we are only doomed to become just another person moving through the world at the pace, the steps, and the instructions given to us by everyone, except ourselves.
Decide to stand for something and don’t be ashamed of it. It might just change the world.
