When I was asked about writing this article, I immediately thought about changing the title.
A few months ago, I challenged myself to stop using the word “try.” As a child, I missed out on the Star Wars trend. But this year, I kept hearing about the force and Darth Vader. So I finally decided to sit down and watch one of the Star Wars movies. I must say that it was not only a good movie, but it also sparked something inside of my soul.
One of the lines that stood out to me was when Yoda told Luke Skywalker, “Do or do not. There is no try.” I pondered on this for awhile. Do or do not.
I now believe that once you make the decision to do something, it will come into fruition –despite any odds that may be against you. “Doing” is taking the first step. The more direct you are with your words and where you stand, the more likely you will be in reaching your goal. No matter what your goal is – whether it’s to write a best-selling novel, go back to school; or to start that company you’ve always wanted to start – you can achieve it.
Here are four reasons why you should just “do it,” even against all odds:
1) You owe it to yourself
So many of us wait for something to happen…like a fairy tale. But life is not a fairy tale. If you want to get somewhere in this world, you have to act. The worst thing you can do is sit and wait for something to happen. You don’t want to look back and say “I should have done…” Remember, only you can change your life for the better. You owe it to yourself to live a life full of adventure.
2) Personal growth
Taking action makes you a stronger person. Once, you make a decision to act, life will guide you to what you need to know. Wisdom is a powerful tool that we learn only through living. As a rock does not have wisdom, you will not have or gain wisdom if you don’t choose to act. Don’t hinder your personal growth and what you can become by never taking that first step.
3) Advancing the world and helping others
We all have gifts. Once we make the decision to use our gifts, the world becomes a better place. We all must help advance the world, not hinder it. So take that first step, you never know who is watching you and who you could impact.
4) Happiness
Once you accomplish the action of doing, you will be much happier than you would be simply sitting on your sofa thinking about doing it. Trust me. You will feel a sense of joy from just taking the first step and seeing it all the way through. I believe that happiness comes from doing. Not doing only results in a load of negative emotions, feelings, and actions. And no one wants to be around that.
At the end of the day…
We all simply want reassurance that we are going in the right direction. However, if you stop doing, then you stop going in any direction. You become stagnant and can’t see past your current situation because you aren’t doing anything.
