Reality TV: Why You May Have To Guard Your Heart From Its “Realities”

‘Reality’ shows have become the new must see leading programs on television. BUT they are also hurting our society’s morals and ruining young brain cells at the same time.

These shows display the personal lives of individuals from various social classes and different age groups.

It is almost impossible to read the newspaper or sit in a public place without overhearing individuals talk about the rude behavior that happened on the latest episode of one of these shows. As I hear and read the comments from the viewers, I am reminded of the words from the apostle John. He warned that world about the lust of our flesh, eyes, and the pride of life.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” (1 John 2:15-17)

John basically lets us know that it is JUST NOT WORTH IT!  It is natural for our bodies to crave what the eyes see and the flesh to seek gratification, but the results of these pleasures can be permanently damaging. But he even knew back then that there was nothing beneficial in investing time and emotions into things that are temporary, deceiving, and ultimately, destructive for our lives.

Television is the most influential instrument used in this society that introduces and provides mankind with lies and perverted entertainment. Yet, unfortunately, the majority of the viewers are the youth, whose minds are being polluted with vain thoughts and foolish decision-making.

Romans 12:1-2 tells us what we must do to avoid living our lives in vanity and under the dominion of lust “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove to be what is good and acceptable and perfect in the will of God.”

Let us be mindful that we have an adversary who is constantly using deceitful tactics– such as television shows– to implant into the minds of our families, our communities, and society with visual depictions of what the “good life” is all about.

Please believe that in the majority of the time the television producers are only giving those who are watching their reality programs half of the truth about these people’s lives. Let us be wise and not watch that which is false and ungodly. Spiritual wickedness thrives on unholy thoughts that can enter in from the gates of our eyes. This entrance into our soul can bring forth corruption into our hearts. We must be vigilant at all times and not be ignorant to Satan’s works.

(Philippians 4:8).
