One day in the late 1800s a man called Charles D. Fey decided to make a few tweaks to some of the existing incredibly rudimentary slot machines, and due to his engineering prowess, he ended up creating the blueprint for these gambling games that we all love today. He certainly deserves a whole load of credit for this, however, the funny thing is that the modern pay with mobile slots industry is pretty much unrecognizable from what it was like in his day.

The reason why? While slot machines were getting better and better during the 20th century, it was the emergence of online slots at the start of the 21st century that completely and utterly changed everything. It is regularly called the fastest growing industry in the entire gambling market, and there is little that anyone can say to argue against that. Read on for a discussion.

Charles D. Fey and the Liberty Bell machine

First things first, to really appreciate how quickly the online slots industry is growing it is well worth taking a look back to the very first slot machines, as it can really put this remarkable growth into perspective. In the late 1800s, there were a few rudimentary slot machines dotted around California, and an engineer called Charles D. Fey saw an opportunity to develop this blueprint, eventually creating the Liberty Bell machine.

This was the first slot machine that could actually pay out physical coinage from the machine itself, with the prizes won from earlier machines have to be collected from the bar. As you might imagine it spread like wildfire due to this fact, providing the foundation for the modern online slot industry.

The slots explosion of the 20th century

Charles D. Fey’s Liberty Bell machine and its various impersonations grew to be incredibly popular in California during the very early 20th century, however, it wasn’t until gambling was legalized in places like Nevada that the slots industry could start reaching its maximum potential.

By the 1960s slots could be found in pretty much every casino across the US, especially in Las Vegas, and they were also becoming insanely popular all around the world. The industry was expanding at a terrific rate, with new slot developers popping up throughout the 1900s, however, it still pales in comparison to the crazy growth of online slots.

The beginning of the online slots industry

As soon as slot engineers managed to use the recently discovered RNG – Random Number Generator – to create the world’s first video slots people were already starting to think about the possibility of online slots, however, due to technological limitations, it would take until the very early 21st century for these things to be properly realized.

Early developers like Eyecon released the first titles in the early 2000s, and from then on the online slot industry has experienced wild exponential growth.

And if you thought the first years of the online slot industry brought tremendous growth, just wait until things like mobile slots and HD graphics enter the fray. The industry is way more than ten times larger than it was only five years ago!
