After watching the documentary, Light Girls, I feel like my eyes have been open to something that I have often felt marginalized in experiencing.

The question being, “What are you?”

This video address it perfectly.

I can’t tell you how many times I have been asked this question. I always want to say, “Well, I’m a human being.” I always want to say this, although I know it’s probably rude. The question just irks me and makes a little irritated.

I get what people are asking. They want to know my ethnicity. I think the correct question then should be, “What ethnicity are you?”

I have always talked to people and friends of mine who have experienced this so that helped me in not feeling alone, but the documentary was very eye-opening and comforting in many ways.

In the documentary, I love how director Bill Duke captures the common situations and shared experiences that most women who have light complexions face. I think it addresses larger issues and provides ways for us as a society to have conversations about things that we all face- no matter our color.

I guess there’s a lot more conversations that we need to have in our society.
