Dear People of the Modern World,
We appreciate your calling us Millennials. It’s actually a better way to be defined than by race or gender. You know, the labels that cause riots and separation. It’s nice to be defined by your work ethic, intelligence and even ability to change the world!
When observing the Millennial generation, society (and even our parents) raise the question, “Where did we go wrong?” Well, what you forgot to teach are the ways of the world… how to prepare ourselves, how to take care of ourselves, how to talk the corporate talk or how to walk the creative walk. You did your best to protect us from the cruel world with a history of slavery, genocide and just plain evil. You wanted us to be better, smarter and anything we dreamed of being. And so we did….
But then we hit roadblocks. We hit hardships and didn’t know how to handle it. We couldn’t understand why a company would give employees a 30-minute lunch break or terrible benefits. We couldn’t understand why our government insisted on controlling women’s rights. We couldn’t understand why we have to treat a person with lighter or darker skin differently. (Well, some of questioned the logic, but not all). We couldn’t understand the crazy corporate hierarchy and why I needed to be afraid when the CEO walked by (he/she is not Beyonce). The ways of the world just didn’t make sense to us.
As Millennials, we want everyone to have a piece of the pie. We want people to have the opportunity to live how they want. So… we tried to change things. But now, you’ve labeled us as lazy and entitled. How dare we conform to shallowing the rock of getting paid less than our worth? How dare we take care of our health and demand better food regulations? How dare we explore our creative abilities and sustainable energy? How dare we embrace our natural selves? (#blackgirlmagic)
I mean who do we think we are?
Well, as horrible as it may sound to some but we are the future leaders of this world that will teach the next generations the ways of the world. The good, bad and the ugly. We will teach what we never learned and had to figure out. We will create a longer and kinder world. We will take care of the planet as best we can because it’s our home. It’s where we eat, sleep, work and breathe. We need to give the earth the same respect we give a CEO.
Millennials, I send positive vibes into the air and through the digital waves that we see and create a better future. Not because the past was messed up but because we should always be striving for growth and change.
Lovingly,
-NJS
P.S. Thank you for paving the way for us to plant change.
