There are big things happening lately for our Tech Talent South (TTS) alumna, Andrea Hernandez.
Her startup Merienda has been delivering speciality picnics around New Orleans, making the city’s summertime a little more magical. From her most recent segment on WWLTV to a winning pitch that landed her on the pages of TechCrunch.
Currently, Merienda delivers various picnic packages ranging from a $45 package to a $1,000 platinum package. Each package comes with a “picnic butler” to set up and tear down the picnic spread.
We caught up with her to hear some fun updates on her startup, why she got coding with TTS and how New Orleans keeps her inspired!
1) Tell us a short and sweet bit about what you’ve been up to lately – what’s been happening?
Lately I’ve been working on finding an operations manager for Merienda in New Orleans. We’re also looking to introduce lower-tier priced picnic tote bags for bigger groups, events, corporate lunches etc. I can go on and on, there’s a lot coming up. I guess all I can say is stay tuned!
2) Now, you’re on to launching a new startup business. We definitely want the details on how Merienda came about…
Originally meant to be called Yogi, inspired by the adorable picnic thief, Merienda came about to replace the hassle of planning for picnics. It’s a basic concept, why can’t I order a picnic like I can order pizza? Basket, wine + food, the whole experience. What’s in a name? Merienda means picnic in Spanish.
3) Tell us all about it (personally, we’re counting down until you expand to other cities)…
How much time you got? JK. At Merienda, we sell the experience of picnics because we believe that every meal should feel like a picnic. Fun, hassle free and enjoyed with family and friends. We also want to encourage people to explore the beautiful green spaces + picnic spots each city has to offer. Once we get the app rolling we’ll be able to simplify our logistics and begin our picnic expansion! Austin + SF bay area are the next places in mind.
4) What is your favorite part about launching this startup, so far?
The challenges that come daily. Working on your own startup, specially without any co-founders, is a daily challenge but I love every bit of it. I’m not known to be someone who gives up easily and every time I accomplish a goal, the satisfaction keeps me going! I’ve learned so much in the past couple of months from experience, mentors, partners and peers.
