How would your perspective change if you really believed that your life and every action you take could change the lives of others? Would you change anything about how you live?
When we’re young, we tend to think that we live in a bubble. We tend to believe that our actions don’t matter and that we should look out for ourselves. We’re told to treat others the way that we want to be treated, but we are often not reminded of how are lives are all connected.
The older that I’ve gotten, the more that I’ve realized the power of making a difference, and how aspiring to make a difference can change your life in every way that you choose to live it. Instead of solely focusing on living for yourself and success, you begin to live for how your life can impact others and its meaning. And the most interesting part is that you realize how the more you choose to live a life of meaning, the more success you have. How is this possible?
Well, I think living a life of meaning is based on concept of reciprocity. When we decide to use our lives to make difference, we reap what we sow. For instance, when we help someone to become successful, we get it back. When you give away good advice, we get it back. When we give away our time, we get it back. When we give away our money, we get it back. When you share our experience to help others, we give it back.
The difference between living a life of meaning versus living a life of success is really based on what you are choosing to live for, which is either only for yourself or for the greater world. Success fades, impact is eternal.
Other people may disagree with me, but I think when you choose to live your life based on success, you can become selfish. I’m not saying being successful is bad, but I think only focusing on what you can get from the world is. This is especially true when you all you may think about is what you can do to get richer, more fame, more clout, or more of anything else, without giving back. Yet when you choose to live a life of meaning, not only are you able to positively impact the lives of others by how you live, but you also gain success in other ways, too.
As your words and actions become seeds in the lives of others, you will eventually reap their benefits from those you’ve impacted. For example, they may positively talk about you to others, causing many to want to emulate you by using their lives to make a difference. As a result, your legacy can continue to impact the world and generations to come.
I know the world may you tell success is everything. But in reality, the positive actions that you imprint upon the world through your life are worth far more. Your purpose can have such a profound and memorable impact –even in the smallest way– when you decide to live for meaning rather than for success. Never take the impact that you can have for granted because at the end of the day, every one of your actions can positively change someone’s life.
