The older we get, the more we’ve realized life is like an onion.
An onion?
You’re probably scratching your head… thinking: “What?” But yes, we said an onion. Don’t be confused.
It’s true. As we get older, we are peeling life one layer at a time (and sometimes while we’re crying). We cry when life gets hard and we cry when life gets happy. Interestingly, that pretty much sums up our year.
Yep, 2015 was full of many moments of self-discovery and our unraveling who we are. It was amazing. And the truths it revealed about the many aspects of life were even more amazing. Here are some truths we collected below:
1. Relationships are what make life meaningful.
It’s the people in your life who matter most. Place yourself around quality people because they are what make life meaningful. As you go through life, you will face disappointments and failures, but it’s your relationships that will move your forward. Quality people are the best kind of people. They make the greatest friends and connections. They help you to believe in yourself and most of all, they bring you a wonderful joy beyond measure that you can then return to others.
2. People can be mean, crazy, and fake.
Let’s repeat that: There are too many mean, crazy, and fake people in the world. But you don’t have to be. Don’t become what you hate. Use the negativity you receive as fuel to put more good into the world and to be what you wish to see.
3. None of us should ever allow someone’s limitations to define our own.
Everyone has an opinion. We don’t need to let theirs become our own. We are each given a dream that is meant for us to fulfill. Many times our individual dreams are meant to defy all known “limits.”
4. Life is too short to not live to the fullest.
Make the most of every day. We need to dare to live the life we want, to take chances, to not take things for granted, and to live life to the fullest. It seems like the older we get, the faster time goes. That means we need to make the most of it before it’s too late.
5. It never hurts to try.
Be hungry. Be driven to make your dreams happen, no matter what. Be wiling to try. You’d be surprised by what’s possible when you try, when you get the nerve to believe and act. As Swami Sivananda: “Put your heart, mind, and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.”
6. A large part of our lives is about becoming who we were created to be.
Most of the world is captivate crafting their own identities and shaping themselves into becoming all that they were created to be. Interestingly, it seems that when we really set out on this mission of discovering our purpose and becoming who we are, that’s when we feel the most fulfilled with our lives and live a life full of greater meaning.
7. The people who you surround yourself with, are the people you become.
Be selective in who you have in your life. Be selective with whom you spend most of your time with. Sometimes this means letting people out of your life, and that’s OK. These are decisions that you have to make,if you want to lead the life you dream. ‘Nough said here because this says it all.
8. It’s not about how many times you fall. It’s about how many times you get back up.
You can always rise above any situation. It doesn’t matter what it is. You have everything inside of you to fight through. And regardless of how many times you fall down as you try to rise above it, just get back up. Challenges do not come to defeat you; they come to make you stronger.
9. It’s the little things and the little moments that make life worthwhile.
Aim to find joy in them. Spend as much time as you can with friends and family. One day, you’ll run out of time, so always make the most of your moments with them.
10. It’s hard to live the life of your dreams.
But that’s what life is all about. It’s about stretching yourself and challenging yourself to become greater than you’ve imagined. It’s about continuously looking for ways that you can begin to improve yourself so that you can live your dreams. And though it’s hard to do, it’s worth it. It’s always worth it when it means that you can live the life of your dreams.
11. You are the key.
Take personal responsibility for your life. You are the key to your reaching your dream, to your living up to your greatness, and to your making your contribution to the world. It’s you. You simply have to be willing to make what you want happen. No one else can do it for you.
12. Life is not just about how far you go, but also how many people you bring with you along your journey.
Too many people are selfish. They think only about themselves and live their lives for themselves. But life can be so much more than this. We need to live our lives based on the positive impact that they can have on others. We all are on a journey. Bringing others along with us is what makes our journey the greatest treasure.
13. Everything happens for a reason.
Sometimes we can only understand why things happen when we look back years later, and sometimes we understand immediately. Sometimes when things happen, it sucks and sometimes, it’s incredible. Either way, trust that everything happens for a reason. Somehow, some day, all of the dots will connect. When we grasp that everything happens for a reason, that’s when we are able to realize that everything we’ve encountered – good and bad- has and will continue to shape us into becoming who we are ultimately supposed to become. Everything is part of our fulfilling our greater purpose.
