“I am a Believer. I am Christian. I am made in God’s image. I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Sure, these are all statements that we are familiar with, but it seems that those of us saying these statements rarely know what they really mean.
But do we as Believers sincerely know who we are?
Discovery who you are can be a scary thought when you don’t know where to start; but luckily God loves us enough to give us a hint. Genesis is where it all begins. In Genesis chapter 1 verse 27 God simply says, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” This is a very simple yet complex statement. But honestly, it is actually simple, because it plainly says that we were created in God’s image. In fact, it only becomes complex when we actually think of what is God’s image.
When nobody has ever seen God’s face, it makes it hard to understand just exactly what His image is. If we don’t know what God looks like, and we were created in His image, how then can we know who and how we are supposed to be?
The Bible goes onto say in Psalm 138: 14 that “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made…” While this verse lends further clarity into the situation, there are still a few shades of gray left. This problem can be quite troubling if not addressed properly. Stop and think about it, if we don’t know who we are, we are left vulnerable for the world to shape our self- image; that is a scary idea.
If we are lacking in knowledge of God’s image and the world is left to tell us who we are, it is no wonder why babies are having babies, homes are falling apart, society is so corrupt and everything seems to be in disarray. The easy solution to the problem seems to be to figure out God’s image, thereby figure out ours as well. However simple this plan may sound, its execution is not as basic.
Getting to know God may take different lengths of time for different people and some may never succumb to His greatness. Is all hope lost? Are we destined to be a people void of identity left to be molded by whoever chooses to? No! God tells us that He will never leave us nor forsake us.
The solution is quite simple, for those of us who have found God’s image and have gotten to know Him to go out and spread the Word. Take someone in under us and teach them who their Creator is. To go out and be the light of the world and allow people to see the God in is, therefore giving them just a little more of an idea of who God is.
Hence, although we may be lacking in physical descriptions of God, we certainly are not lacking in His personality attributes. God is powerful, compassionate, all –knowing, eternal, loving, selfless, kind, giving, gracious, merciful, Holy and much more. If anything, there are not enough adjectives to describe Him in all His fullness. In my eyes, the most profound description we have of God is 1 John chapter 4 verse 8, “God is love.”
It’s essential we realize that God truly is love. If God is love and we are created in His image, we are meant to also be love, to give love, receive love and let our acts be guided by love. That’s one of the most important characteristics of my God and of us as well. We were created and molded in love, in His image.
I’ll leave you with this verse from 1 John chapter 4 verse 12, “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.” Be blessed.
