Humble Minds, Hungry Hearts: An Emerging Clothing Line With A Heartfelt Message

“We live in such a cruel world, yet people still have to remain humble.”

Those are the words of James Fleming. He is the creator of Humble Minds, Hungry Hearts, a fashion forward clothing line that represented a heartfelt message. He created the line alongside one of his longtime friends, Marcus Smith.

“We see so many celebrities get famous and lose their humility,” Fleming said. “I started to think of ways I could get my message across that it’s ok to be hungry but you still have to remain humble because at any given time, things can be taken away from you. That’s why it’s so important to understand humility.”

After much brainstorming and planning, Fleming decided it was time to begin the process of starting a business. Neither Fleming nor Smith knew much about the workings of the fashion industry. They reached out to locals in search of guidance, but little did they already knew what needed to be done.

Fleming: "Humble Minds Hungry Hearts is a brand that I established in 2013. The reason behind this brand is to help people understand that it is okay to be hungry at heart for success, but with that success, one must keep a humble mind. The humbleness of the mind will feed the hunger of the heart. " (Photo courtesy of Humble Minds, Hungry Hearts)

The pair sought out ways to make their clothing line different from just an image on a t-shirt. They wanted a message to spread across the masses. Fleming began wearing his own shirts around and people began to ask about the designs. Business wasn’t great, however, it was a stepping stone.

After hitting a rough patch, Fleming thought about giving up everything. But something told him to just keep going, and he did. More than a year later, the company is gaining ground.

“We have people from the South and the West Coast buying our products,” Fleming said. “It’s a good feeling to know that people outside of Michigan believe in our vision.

Their products have even been sent to celebrities including DJ Mustard and Flavor of Love star Deelishis.

Fleming and Smith grew up in the Metro Detroit area where they both still reside. Fleming also recently brought another long time friend to the company, Edward McCrary, who serves as the graphic designer. The group is now in the process of incorporating philanthropic events and ideas into the company.

“Giving back to the younger generation is very important to us,” Smith said. “We want young kids to be able to wear our shirts to school on their free dress day while spreading a positive message. We want them to work hard for success and still remain humble.”

Knowing that the road won’t be easy, Fleming is ready for anything that may stand in the way. As the company grows, there will be much more history on the books to come.
