How Simplifying My Life, Improved My Life

Out of all the things I’ve learned about life, I have found this lesson to be the most beneficial: simplicity is key.

It’s the key to structure, order, balance, and so much more. The phrase,”Keep it simple,” resonates with me now more than ever. It is simplicity that has improved the quality of my life, the direction of my life, and how I live my life.

Instead of living up to everyone’s standards, to having a huge to-do list, or to stressing about the chaos that life can bring, I’ve decided to stick with what really matters. No longer do I overwhelm myself with the little things or all of the big things that come my way. I’ve chosen to simplify my life, for the sake of my life.

So how did I simplify my life? Well, for one, I made a quick list of everything that was overwhelming me and why. I didn’t detail it too much, just enough to know what was on my mind. From there, the “simplifying” process took its course.

I decided to only start making time for what I wanted to make time for. I also started to stay more organized, instead of letting things pile up for no reason. Finally, I tried to eliminate the things that stressed me out as much as possible. For instance, I used to make myself be surrounded by people… just because. I knew I didn’t want to hang around them. But for some reason, I felt this pressure to spend time with them. That stage of my life is over. And so are all of the other annoying things that I realize were having a huge impact on my quality of life. Honestly, it was hard to embrace this simplistic mantra. But it was necessary, especially for my sanity.

I understand now what Avril Lavigne meant about life getting complicated (though I know she was really talking about the guy she was dating). I feel like, we are the ones who make life complicated. Why do we go and make things so complicated, huh? Doesn’t make sense, but we do. We force ourselves into stress and irritating situations that we know we don’t want to be in. And for what? Who are we really trying to please? It’s a balancing act really that can’t be handled, which is why I finally decided I needed to do something about it.

Simplifying my life has forced me to focus on what really matters to me, and who really matters to me. It’s reshaped my perspective on how much control we have over our lives. Now, the simple things are what matter. Simplicity has become one the keys in my life. As a result, I’m happier, calmer, and overall, a better person because of it.
