Feeling Under the Weather? Here Are Some “Healing Foods” That May Help

Hey all! So I’ve been a tad bit under the weather these past few days.

While dealing with a sore throat, on-and-off fever and feeling all around pretty miserable…there were a few meals that I had to help ease me through my sickness.

I thought I’d make a little list of some of my favorite “healing” foods – the dishes and drinks that can get you through some pretty sickly days. So, here we go!

TONKOTSU RAMEN

Ramen or soups in general have always helped me out when I had a cold or sore throat. Tonkotsu ramen is my favorite dish though, because of its bold flavor, rich broth, and I am such a sucker for pork. It’s kind of weird, but I love trying different ways to eat pork, like carnitas or ribs. Therefore, Tonkotsu really helps me with its creamy, thick broth made from boiling pork bones. Along with the pork and noodles, there’s also other delicious additions, like a hard-boiled egg, bamboo, spinach, and fried onions.

If you’re feeling ill or even just have had a bad day, then this dish will give you a tasty pick me up!

PEPPERMINT TEA WITH STEAMED LEMONADE
Take your favorite mug, and mix peppermint tea and steamed lemonade together, add a touch of honey and any coughs or sore throats will be soothed! Peppermint is good for an upset stomach and indigestion related problems. It’s helpful in giving your tummy a numbing effect by relaxing the muscles in those areas and alleviating pain and distention. You can try ordering this at your local coffee shop or making it at home. I’ve ordered it before at Starbucks and they’ll sometimes add a “calming” or “relaxing” tea into the mix to really help you out.

CEVICHE

My boyfriend is Mexican-American and he’s taught me about a glorious hangover cure – ceviche. It’s a popular cold Latin dish primarily made up of chopped seafood, avocado and other veggies, cilantro, and some chilli and lime to pep it up. As I previously mentioned, this is not only great for hangovers, but it’s also a healthy dish to eat because of the veggies and fish that come within it. This is a go-to appetizer of mine when I want something fresh, healthy and definitely flavorful.

GRANOLA AND FRUIT

Granola and fruit can be an “anytime” meal for me when I’m not my best – breakfast, lunch or dinner. I’ll eat my granola and fruit sometimes with yogurt and other times with non-fat or almond milk.

Yogurt has active cultures that can help fight colds. Whole-grain cereals and granola deliver nutrients known to support your immune system such as zinc, iron and selenium. They also provide good amounts of fiber and protein. I usually add fruit on top because they provide great antioxidants, improve the immune system, and help treat viruses.

Cheers to healing your body with healthier food!
