Get Your Perfect Tan This Summer. Here’s How

The diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers in the U.S has increased by 77 percent between 1994 and 2014. According to new statistics on skin cancer about 90 percent of skin cancers are associated with exposure to Ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

In the summertime it seems like it is almost essential to a have a nice tan before going away for vacation, but traditional sun tanning can drastically increase your risk for cancer. Fake-bake tanners have come a long way since they first came on the scene, and they the healthiest option to get a gorgeous tan.  With a few tips, you no longer have to look like a walking carrot to have a beautiful tan for your summer travels.

  1. Preparation is Key

If you want your fake tanner to look even and smooth, you need to adequately prepare your skin for application. What can make a fake tanner look really unrealistic is the areas of your body that are very dry, as these are the places that the tanner will get the darkest.

The best way to prepare your skin is to heavily exfoliate with either a buffing sponge, exfoliating gloves, or a great exfoliating scrub mixture in the shower. You can even create your own skin scrubbing mixture with common items found in your own kitchen cupboard.

Try mixing coffee grounds from your morning brew and with your favorite oil. Coconut oil, hemp oil, and olive oils are the perfect way to adhere the coffee grounds and make a delicious smelling scrub. Some studies even show that coffee grounds can deepen your skin tone and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

  1. Shower and Lotion Up

Clean skin is the best for application of fake tanners. Fake tanners have a more realistic color when your skin is freshly washed. The fake tanner solutions come in lotions, foams/mousses, oils and even wipes.

After showering, it is best to apply a non-oily lotion to your knees, knuckles, ankles, and the bottoms of your feet. These areas are the driest on your body, and where the tanner will accumulate the most. For the most natural looking tan you want to heavily lotion these areas so that the color will blend naturally.

  1. Use a Tanning Mitt

An absolute essential to your tanning regime is to purchase a tanning mitt. A tanning mitt is like a snow mitt in that creates a large surface area on your hand to apply tanner without getting tanner inappropriately on your hands. They can be purchased online or at any beauty supply store and are going to make an amazing difference in creating a flawless, realistic looking tan. Rather than rubbing the tanner in with your own hands, you place the product in the middle of the mitt and buff the product in a circular motion all over your body.

  1. Blend, Blend, Blend

Another way to keep the tanner looking realistic is to be stingy on those areas like your knees, knuckles, ankles and bottoms of your feet. You want to put less product in those areas, and blend them gradually as you would apply eyeshadow or other types of makeup. This will give you the most realistic looking tan, and people will never know it isn’t real.

A technique you may also want to experiment with is the claw-hand/foot technique. This involves forming your hand or foot into a claw and then applying the tanner lightly. This bends your hands and feet in such a way that it will prevent the tanner from creasing and building up too heavily in troublesome areas.

  1. Quick Dry Technique

After applying tanner, you unfortunately have to give it adequate time to dry. Most tanners suggest you sleep in the tanner, because it can take 8-10 hours to fully give you the tan you want. A lot of tanners also suggest you be careful not to sweat, get the tanner wet, or wear clothing until the tanner dries completely. Our best suggestion to get a quick dry tan, is to use a hair dryer. Putting the hair dryer on the lowest setting and lightly blowing the hot air all over your body will help the tanner dry evenly and quickly.
