If you happen to see people walking around with red noses today, don’t be alarmed. It’s for a good cause known as Red Nose Day.
On this inspiring day, the Red Nose Day Special will air on NBC from 9 to 11 p.m. EDT today on NBC. The special is a music-and-comedy extravaganza focused on helping to lift children worldwide out of poverty.

Over 65 big name celebrities will appear on the special today. These celebrities include Julia Roberts, Celine Dion, Tyler Perry, Bono, Elton John, Blake Shelton, Margot Robbie and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and more.

The Red Nose Day Special premiered last year in the U.S.
“We were quite excited and ended up raising 23 million dollars,” Richard Curtis, creator of Red Nose Day told NBC.
This year, Curtis and others a part of the special hope to make the same impact or greater.
“We wanna give the feeling of, people being able to directly help kids in trouble,” Curtis Comedian Craig Ferguson, who is hosting the event, told NBC. “It makes the world more like a small town. It’s a more of a community way to help the planet.”

All of the donations raised by Red Nose Day will be split 50/50 to support poverty-fighting charities in the poorest communities in the U.S. and around the world.
Red Nose Day actually started in the U.K. 25 years ago. Since it premiered there, it has garnered over $1 billion.
