It’s crazy how many of us fail to realize the importance of following our instincts, aka our gut. Usually, we’re scared… unsure… or too confused as to why we feel so compelled to take a certain course. But when I choose not to follow my instincts, it works against me.
Leaders throughout history have not only proven why we need to trust our instincts, but they have also encouraged us to follow them –wholeheartedly. For instance, during his commencement speech at Stanford University, legendary former Apple CEO Steve Jobs told the graduating class: “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
It has also been revealed that Jobs told the author of his biography, Walter Isaacson, that intuition was in many cases, more valuable than intelligence, “Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion. That’s had a big impact on my work.” And, he’s right. Intuition is the key to tapping into the person who are supposed to become and the key to helping you make every decision in your life.
But if you’re having a moment in which your inner voice is telling you to take a certain course and you’re scared to do so, I’m going to offer you seven reasons why you should always trust and follow your intuition:
1. It’s always there and knows our innermost being… sometimes more than we know it ourselves (with our logical thinking skills).
No one knows you more than your intuition. It has known you for your entire life. It knew you and the steps you would take to become who you are even before yourself knew. As HuffingtonPost Post chair, president, and editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington noted in her new book, Thrive:” Even when we’re not at a fork in the road, wondering what to do and trying to hear that inner voice, our intuition is always there, always reading the situation, always trying to steer us the right way. But can we hear it? Are we paying attention? Are we living a life that keeps the pathway to our intuition unblocked? Feeding and nurturing our intuition, and living a life in which we can make use of its wisdom, is one key way to thrive, at work and in life.”
2. It allows us to be our most honest selves.
When we’re out and about, it’s hard for us to often be our true selves. We feel this need to put on a persona or proclaim to be someone that we are not. However, by listening to our intuition, we instantly can embrace our true selves as we are.
3. It allows us to connect with people on a deeper level.
This is my favorite one. Not only does following your instinct allow you to be true to your personality and who you are, but those traits that you put out into the world ultimately allow you to connect with people on a much deeper level. In fact, in my years of being on this earth, I have found that I am most appreciated by people -and I appreciate myself more- when I am being who I am. I don’t have to worry about any false things in the between… I can simply be me. As a result, I cannot only empathize with people more, but I can tap into my gifts that I believe can greatly change their lives and the rest of the world. And you can too.
4. It grounds us towards fulfilling our purpose and the calling placed on our lives.
It’s funny how when you really don’t like something or when you don’t like what you are doing, your instincts will constantly beckon at us, pulling you towards something that you love. It’s almost magnetic in that sense. You keep trying to push against it, but somehow your instincts call for you. In these moments, you need to trust your instincts and to follow them because they can protect you and even help you walk into your calling.
5. In moments of solitude, it consistently reminds of who we are, our dreams, and most of all, who we hope to become.
There’s nothing like having a moment of solitude when all you are left to do is to ponder on your purpose, who you are, and what you hope to accomplish in this life. It’s in this moment of solitude that your intuition can guides you and lead you to your next step.
6. It helps us to focus on the positives rather than the negatives.
It’s so easy to get bombarded with everything that is going wrong or everything that “seems to be wrong.” However, it is our intuition that allows us to view the full picture and the true situation for what it is. It allows us to look at things in a new way and always us to live in the moment as begin to accept all of our amazing blessings.
7. It always leads us to where we should be.
To me, this is the best part about intuition. It directs our paths and leads us to better days… to better lives… and to a better appreciation of our lives and what we have to offer through our purpose to the world.
