Many people spend their entire lives trying to find true happiness.

They seek it in their jobs, in their relationships, or in things. But, interestingly, what most renowned leaders and others have found is that happiness can only be found within yourself.

Throughout different moments on our route to adulthood, being happy can sometimes be difficult. But we must realize that it’s not impossible; it’s just something that we have to strive to obtain. To help you along your journey towards happiness, here are 15 pieces of advice from inspirational leaders, writers, and more to inspire you towards finding happiness within yourself:

1. Watch and control your thoughts.

“Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.” ~Lao Tzu

2. Take hold of peace and contentment.

“Happiness, true happiness, is an inner quality. It is a state of mind. If your mind is at peace, you are happy. If your mind is at peace, but you have nothing else, you can be happy. If you have everything the world can give – pleasure, possessions, power – but lack peace of mind, you can never be happy.” ~Dada Vaswani

3. Live in the moment.

“The moments of happiness we enjoy take us by surprise. It is not that we seize them, but that they seize us.” ~Ashley Montagu

4. Be a giver and not always a receiver.

“In my life I’ve learned that true happiness comes from giving. Helping others along the way makes you evaluate who you are. I think that love is what we’re all searching for. I haven’t come across anyone who didn’t become a better person through love.” ~Marla Gibbs

5. Seek your purpose and be passionate about it.

“Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” ~Helen Keller

6. Don’t count on being happy in the future. Be happy and thankful for your life today.

“People look to time in expectation that it will eventually make them happy, but you cannot find true happiness by looking toward the future.” ~Eckhart Tolle

7. Love more.

“Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” ~Robert A. Heinlein

8. Embrace who you truly are.

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” ~Mahatma Gandhi

9. Decide to not take in negativity.

“Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.” ~Abraham Lincoln

10. Be grateful for everything.

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” ~Frederick Keonig

11. Tap into your creativity.

“True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done, the zest of creating things new.” ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

12. Let go of worry and fear.

“There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.” ~Epictetus

13. Diligently seek what makes you happy and believe that you deserve it when you find it.

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.” ~Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

14. See every single thing -good and bad- as a step towards fulfilling your greater purpose.

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.” ~Helen Keller

15. Don’t rely on others to help you find your true happiness.

“Don’t rely on someone else for your happiness and self-worth. Only you can be responsible for that. If you can’t love and respect yourself – no one else will be able to make that happen. Accept who you are – completely; the good and the bad – and make changes as YOU see fit – not because you think someone else wants you to be different.” ~Stacey Charter
