Executive Orders: More Power To The Police

Recently, Donald Trump signed some new executive orders that, essentially, give the police far more power in order to combat the problem of police officers being killed. However, only 135 police officers died in the line of duty in 2016, while police killed over 900 people in the year of 2016, and a disproportionate amount, as to be expected, were Native American, black, or Hispanic, or mentally or physically disabled. Perhaps even more alarming than that, although several police officers went to trial for unlawful killing of citizens last year, not a single one faced jail time, despite the fact that many of the victims were unarmed or even damning video evidence. Giving police officers even more power is alarming, since the justice system is wildly skewed in their favor, and these executive orders are very troubling for PoC and the disabled who are no doubt concerned about how they will fare in the future. Though Trump sees the killing of 135 police officers as a major issue, he has failed to mention anything about police brutality, and these executive orders are likely to only increase it. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to fight this executive order, so the best thing to do would be to donate to supportive organizations, such as the NAACP, the Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund, Black Lives Matter, or the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities or similar organizations. Not only that, but for white allies especially, stand up for marginalized communities. Film what the police do. Lobby for local laws to decrease police brutality and increase training. Stand around when the police are interrogating someone who fits the minority profile to make sure that are safe. Don’t say #AllLivesMatter or #BlueLivesMatter, really listen and try to understand their experience, because just brushing them off or saying brutality victims “deserved” it isn’t helping anyone.
