Purpose.
It’s the one word that most of us are all hoping to fulfill while on this earth, and it’s also the one word that most of us are all searching for. It connects to so much of us: who we are; who we want to be; what do we want to accomplish while we are here on this amazing planet earth; whose lives do we aspire to impact and more. I believe this core message was at the heart of Chadwick Boseman’s life.
It took me a moment to write this piece. I did a lot of reflecting after hearing about his death. I still cannot believe that the Black Panther and 42 star died in late August 2020 of colon cancer at the age of 43. Months ago, I remember reading an article in which the author criticized him for his weight loss. I felt so angry that someone would take the time out to do so when there are so many other topics to focus on in the world besides a person’s weight. Little did that person know nor did I or the world know that behind the scenes, Chadwick was dealing with a health issue that would eventually take his admirable life.
What I admired most about Chadwick was his urgency to get about the work that he was placed on this earth to do. After he found his calling, he went after it – full throttle! Despite the challenges he faced, the critics, the naysayers, the health issues, or even the discrimination, he still kept pursuing his purpose. He still made it his mission to fulfill his life mission. His movies had a profound impact on my life and the idea of how we can fulfill our dreams or things that others might believe are not possible.
Yes, finding and fulfilling our purpose can be complicated at times. Yes, it takes courage. Yes, it can be risky. Yes, the harshness of life, the brutal realities that we face, the numerous discouraging obstacles that we have to overcome on the way to fulfilling our purpose (or really multiple purposes) can feel exhausting at various moments. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes…yes.
But here’s the deal: when we realize that the core essence of who we are is who we become on the route to fulfilling our purpose or multiple purposes, it can drastically change our perspective on the situation. Because it’s in these moments, that we realize our purpose was never necessarily about going through all of the bad times, it was about discovering who we are in the process and impacting the lives of those who we would encounter along the way to fulfilling our purpose.
As Chadwick once said in a commencement speech, “Purpose is the essential element of you. It is the reason you are on the planet at this particular time in history. Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfill… Whatever you choose for a career path, remember the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.”
Only you know your purpose and only you can truly discover it. When you do and if you have, choose to live it out fully each day, knowing that tomorrow is not guaranteed. Another moment is not guaranteed.
All you have is right now – this moment. And honestly, the world needs you now more than ever. We need you to step into your light, to become who you have always known yourself to be, and step into your purpose. We need you.
Choose to believe in the impact of your life.
I end this article asking you: Are you truly living out your purpose?
