In the ‘90s, there was a television show that came on Nickelodeon at midnight entitled, Are You Afraid of the Dark?.
This show was simply about a group of kids who would sit around a campfire and tell their ghost stories. However, there is such a greater message in the title of the show: Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Taking this from a literal perspective, when individuals are afraid of the dark, they have to sleep with some form of light—be it a nightlight, a lamp, the hallway light on, or the light from the television being on—light makes a person feel some level of safety.
Consider an a person who enjoys going for walks in the neighborhood. It is more likely that they will walk during the morning or day when there is light out as opposed to when night falls, and the moon is the only light available. They may not be afraid of the dark, yet there is something that gives them reason to believe that walking in the light is the wiser thing to do.
Well, guess what? In addition, this is a principle that stands in alignment with the word of God! In the book of John 11:9, it reads “… If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world”. When there is light, one is able to clearly see the path they are walking and where it will lead to. Yet in the dark, there is no light to provide guidance on where to walk that shall not cause stumbling, or falling.
What is the light of this world? John 8:12, “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. It is not just the sun that provides the light in this world, but it is ultimately the Son of the Most High who is the provider of bringing light to this world.
When we follow Christ, we will not walk in darkness, but rather we walk as children of light. In the dark, lies the domain of evil works such as orgies, drunkenness, sexual immorality, sensuality, quarreling and jealousy {Romans 13:13}. It is when night falls that we observe many individuals engaging in evil works because there is absence of light. Many things of the sinful nature –such as those previously listed– are done in secret. Yet, the word of God informs us that everything that is done in secret will be brought to the light! The question is: Are YOU afraid of the light?
Being One With The Light
The light is where I must abide; yet the darkness is where I seem to hide.
Lies and deception overtake me; yet I deeply long for Thee.
If only I could shake the earth & spin this place,
Maybe then darkness could turn to light & I will no longer please me,
But I would be in a rightful position to please Thee.
I must conquer this fear of light; rebuke the evil works that come upon me at night.
No secrets, No more hiding,
In the light is where I am abiding.
I am a child of the light; I need the Son.
Darkness is no longer a factor,
The Light & I will walk as one.
