You would think that after the countless news stories about bullying and its tremendous negative impact that people would really think twice before posting their thoughts.
That of course, still doesn’t seem to be the case. This is especially true when it comes to online trolls slamming celebrities or those in the public eye. They have the rationale that that they can get away with their mean words just because they’re not saying them directly to their face.
One of my favorite celebrities, Tia Mowry, recently called out a cyberbully in the most epic way, demonstrating to all cyberbullies that they should really think twice before posting a mean comment.
The former Sister, Sister star posted a photo of herself on her Instagram:
Unfortunately, she later found a rude comment posted by a cyberbully. The woman posted, “Getting fat.” Those utter words were a complete fail on her part. Not only did Tia respond back to the woman, but she also called her out, stating: “Internet BULLYING is not cool and it needs to stop. Would you say this to my face?”
After, the woman later deleted her account. Additionally, the organization, HBCU Travelers, that Tia referred to also posted on its page, saying it “does not encourage bullying in any way, shape, or form.” In addition, those of the organization stated: “To @tiamowry: the young lady you mentioned does not work for our organization, but was a supporter of our mission, which can be viewed on our website,” the post read. “You are beautiful inside and out, and it saddens me to see that she would make the negative remark that she did. We will be sure to use this incident to stand out against negativity! Please continue to inspire and uplift others.”
I think what Tia did was very brave and very inspiring. It’s unfortunate because this isn’t the first time that she has had to speak out against people directly body shaming her. She also did so late last year.
I think calling out the cyberbully and other bullies in a professional and heartfelt way will make them realize that they cannot and should not get away with their actions. Their actions have consequences and greatly impact people. I think we all need to take a stand against not only bullies, but also body shaming, like Tia continues to advocate for us to do.
So, Tia, you go girl!!! We support you!!
