Don’t spend all your free time doing household chores. Follow these tips to ensure you hire high-quality cleaning services.
1. Referrals
Start by asking friends and family who they use – referrals give you an inside look at what a company is all about – not just what they say on their website (let’s be honest, a company can write anything). Companies can make themselves sound amazing, credible and experienced, but a referral from a friend or family can paint a different picture and carries more weight.
2. Rates
The cost for a professional cleaning service will depend on the services you request, the frequency of visits and the size of your home. Ask if they charge by the hour or by the project. Don’t settle for an estimate over the phone — most house cleaning services offer free in-home estimates.
3. Cleaning Supplies
Do they use their own cleaning supplies and tools, or do you have to supply your own? We require our clients to supply their own and, of course, help them determine exactly what they need. We sell kits or provide them with a shopping list based on their specific requirements. I believe that a mop should be used in one house, or else the crud from house A will make its way over to house B.
4. Communications
This tip can be a really tough one for some people. As I mentioned before, there are many different ways to clean a house, and each client thinks their way is the right way. Some people think floors should be vacuumed before dusting because vacuuming can stir up dust from the floors that then settles on the furniture. Other people think that floors should be cleaned last because everything can get knocked down on them. Some people think bleach is needed to disinfect toilets, others don’t want bleach in their homes at all. Some people want their dishes washed and put away, others can’t stand the thought of having a cleaner touch the dishes and want the dirty dishes to be piled into a clean sink. You name it, we’ve heard a complaint about it.
5. Don’t be shy making your wishes known.
If you want clutter removed from under beds or a seven-foot bookshelf dusted at every visit, put it in writing. The house cleaning service may have requests of their own, such as bedding being stripped prior to their arrival. Do a walk-through of your house and make a list of your priorities and desires — it may take a couple of cleanings for you and the company to get accustomed to each other.
6. Terms of Service
Find out what the policy for cancelling or changing your service is. This policy should be in place so that you don’t get slapped with any surprise fees. Many companies charge a cancellation fee because it can be hard to reschedule cleaners at the last minute, and the company has to cover off their lost wages. So, if you know this information, you can better plan and prepare for any scheduling issues.
