Summer’s here and it’s vacation season! You’ve worked hard all year around and it’s time to let the stress and worries of work wash away in a comfortable haze somewhere far from home. Before you hop on your flight, or even if you’re just still planning that ultimate vacation, we’ve got some tips for you to help make that vacation an even healthier experience.
With advice ranging from taking healthy snacks with you to encouraging yourself to move around more, these tips will help make sure you stay healthy while on vacation and more importantly, and hopefully, come back healthier than when you left.
Work Those Legs!
When you’re out and about on vacation, get outside and work those legs! If your hotel is within walking distance of your attractions, we heartily recommend you walk as much as you can. Considering the modern working environment and how we’re all typically chained to our desks all day long, your body will be grateful for the chance to stretch out those legs. If everything is just out of walking reach, rent a bike. Lots of tourist-friendly hotspots have bike rental easily available due to the sheer convenience bikes provide.
Some cities have even begun using bike sharing stations which are controlled entirely from your cell phone. These stations have several bikes at the ready to be ridden around town, are cheap and convenient to use, and cities that have them are typically very bike friendly anyways. Grabbing a bike and getting around London that way will certainly be faster and more entertaining than being trapped in a cab in London’s notoriously bad traffic. Finally, another happy party to your walking around will be your wallet!
Walking and renting bikes is far cheaper than constantly paying for cabs and even using public transport in some cases. Get your but moving this vacation to save your legs and your cash.
Casual Classes
Another excellent way to get your body moving while on vacation is to do a little bit of research about local casual classes on offer at your destination. Gyms and dance studios at your destination are likely to have casual classes for a whole host of activities you can attend. If you’re trying to get more immersed in the local culture, there’s no better way to move your butt and learn culture by joining a casual dance class teaching the local dance.
For instance, if you’re in Southern Spain, do a bit of reading up and find out if there’s a Flamenco dance you can join to learn a few of the steps. Not only will you move and get a bit of a sweat, you’ll learn some sweet new moves to show off to friends and family back home.
Rest and Relax
Yes, we recommended you stay active while on vacation in the above paragraphs, but you shouldn’t be pushing yourself to be active at the cost of your well-deserved rest and relaxation. Our bodies need their rest and this is especially true if you crossed several time zones during the trip to your destination. Don’t stress too much about anything and make sure to give your body time to acclimate and relax. You went on vacation to unwind, not to worry about staying fit and active the whole time you’re there. Find ways to relieve stress that you enjoy, such as reading a book by the ocean or just sleeping in because you can. Pace yourself, and you’ll have a more pleasant experience.
Good Healthy Eating
You can’t travel anywhere without sampling the local cuisine. In fact, it’s almost a tragedy if you don’t manage to try something you can’t back home. But moderation is key and just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you should sacrifice your healthy eating habits for pure relaxation. Do a little bit of research about where you’re going and try to plan what you’d definitely like to eat. Research is especially important because you’re eating food unfamiliar to you and your body. As a result, make sure you’re still getting your required nutrients and consider even bringing some organic green powder to make sure you’re keeping healthy. Another excellent way to eat healthier is to take a day to try your hand at cooking the local food! We all dream of cooking authentic foreign foods at home now’s your chance! You can get any ingredient you want to make a truly authentic and probably healthier than at a restaurant dish.
Ultimately, the goal is to keep healthy on vacation and I think we can conclusively say the best way to do it is to continue to use some measure of moderation. Yes, rest and relaxation are fantastic but don’t become a complete couch potato where you go. Conversely, don’t push your body to the ragged edge while on vacation. You need the rest! Take your time, and enjoy your vacation while giving your body what it deserves.
