Joseph Campbell: The Father of Bliss

Joseph Campbell who was a bright-eyed child born to a Roman Catholic family became enthralled with Native American culture in his aging years. His worldview was sculpted by the dynamic differences between these two contrasting cultures.

Joseph was unsure of what to do with his professional life after college so he chose to complete a cross-country trip through the US to experience “the soul of America” while searching for the purpose of his own life. After the fact Campbell wrote of his findings saying in regards to purpose: “I don’t know where it is—but I feel just now pretty sure that it isn’t in books. — It isn’t in travel. — It isn’t in California. — It isn’t in New York. … Where is it? And what is it, after all?”

The answer? Bliss is at the end of your comfort zone. It’s found at the end of where you think you should be and begins where you actually are in life. Bliss is achieved when you forget about what you think you want and find what you need.

So how do you find this path to bliss in your own life?

Defining Bliss

Bliss is dependent on the person it occupies and defining it is a tricky task that Campbell spent his lifetime trying to do. In modern day, we define bliss as an innate state of inner joy. It’s the state of complete knowingness and uplifted consciousness. Being blissful comes when you’re doing things that bring you a sense of deep happiness.

Joy, like bliss, is the fiber of your soul. Even on days when you feel exhausted and beaten by the world around you, holding on to your bliss can make you feel better. Because joy and bliss are foundations of your inner happiness, you can always come back to the sense of inner peace they provide.

How to find and follow your own bliss

So how do you find this alluring bliss? >Diana Raab of Psychology Today says,“There’s really no deep magic in finding your bliss. It’s a matter of taking time for yourself, reflecting, reviewing and documenting what brought you joy in the past.”

To accept bliss into your life, be open-minded about what comes into your life, allowing yourself to become a risk taker. As we know, the road less traveled has the best surprises, so focus on exploring the world around you that you are not familiar with yet. Being open to new ideas, opportunities, and experiences can create a life that is otherwise left to be lived by another.

Being proactive in having a positive attitude can help you reach a blissful state. If you focus your life’s compass in the direction of joy and positivity you will eventually cultivate a sense bliss. Choose to trust your life and your path. Joseph Campbell said it best “If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living.”

Meditate

A good way to cultivate personal bliss is to meditate on a time in your life that you were happiest. By remaining in that moment, and the feelings from that moment, you can remind yourself of the feeling you are actively reaching towards.

Journal

Recording your feelings in a journal can help you dig deeper into a path of self-discovery. Doing so can help you determine ways that can help you follow your bliss. Self-discovery is important because it can lead to self-transformation. Being more aware of yourself and your wants and needs can help you attain a state of bliss.

Hone in on a side hustle skills

If your current career is not fulfilling your blissful nature, consider honing your time and energy on creating a hobby or side hustle that can bring you bliss. There are many tools that can help make this endeavor easier for you.

Listen to music

Listening to music can bring you pleasure and comfort even in the most difficult times. Music is used in rehabilitation facilities as well as during surgery. Many studies show that listening to music during uncomfortable times in life can help to regulate your mood and mental health.

You know you’re fulfilling your bliss when you feel energetic and creative. Having a good sense of direction and meaning to your life is important to cultivate the bliss that Joseph Campbell put so much emphasis on. Bliss is all around you. It’s just how you capture it and what you do with it that determines your ultimate happiness.
