“Bullying is an issue which can affect any one of us, regardless of age, background, gender, sexuality, race, disability or religion,” Prince William says as the video starts. “It can happen for many reasons. It is often stupid and cruel and can take many forms.”
Prince William further explains the severe impact and long-lasting effects that bullying can have on its victims, especially through technology. He also references how over 16,000 students stay home from school each day so that they are not bullied. He urges us all to take action in putting an end to bullying everywhere. This has driven him to take initiative in helping to end bullying.
“It is our collective responsibility to be alert, and to be ready to challenge the behavior we see around us,” he says. “We all have a role to play to ensure that we do not standby, but instead stand up, and put a stop to bullying.”
In a statement about the Diana Award’s anti-bullying campaign, chief executive of the charity, Tessy Ojo, says: “This campaign goes beyond the 1 in 2 people affected by bullying; it is about everyone, every single one of us taking the collective responsibility to tackle bullying. It is also about changing the perceived view that bullying is a rite of passage. We know the devastating effect bullying has on people, which reaches way beyond the school gates. Make a pledge to do something different, to act differently and to offer kindness, whenever and wherever possible, because being a bystander, simply makes us a part of the problem.”
The powerful video adds to the list of great strides that the young dad is making to tackle the issue of bullying worldwide for the current generation and for future ones. While speaking at a technology conference in June, he mentioned that as a father, he has become alarmed by the increase in bullying incidents making news worldwide.
For instance, he created a taskforce involving tech industry leaders and companies to combat cyber-bullying and online abuse; he is involved in workshops around the U.K. that teach young people how be leaders at their schools; and he has met with parents who’ve lost their children to suicide after being bullied due to their sexuality.
Furthermore, he was recently featured on the cover of a leading British gay magazine called, Attitude. According to reports, Prince William made history as being the first royal ever to pose for the cover of a gay publication. In an interview with the magazine, Prince William strongly condemned bullying saying, “No one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason.” We here at RIZZARR agree.
Keep up the great work, William! Let’s all join him in using our lives to help end bullying.
