Along the road of getting to where it is that you want to be, you’ll encounter great triumphs, setbacks, and terrible shortcomings. Yeah, I hate to say this, but it’s full of continuous high and lows, things I like to call the good, the bad, and the ugly.
At different points, life can feel overwhelming and as if it’s all too much to bear. But what I’ve come to understand is that every situation is neither good, bad, nor ugly. On the contrary, each situation is an opportunity.
The result of each situation that we encounter in life is all about our perspective and how we respond. It’s all about taking something that is happening and turning it into an opportunity of growth, of change, and of learning more about the world as well as ourselves. It’s with each of these situations that we can make our own destiny and do the best with what we’re given in everything.
And that’s the thing about life…each good, bad, or ugly situation that we encounter presents itself as an opportunity for us to strive for more, to become more, and achieve more than we have ever dreamed. We just have to be willing to change our perspective about what those situations mean. And honestly, that’s what the most successful people do. As pastor Rick Warren shared in his daily newsletters, the most successful people throughout history took defeats from previous situations to move forward towards success:
– George Washington lost two-thirds of all the battles he fought. But he won the Revolutionary War and later became the first U.S. president.
– Napoleon graduated 42nd in a class of 43. Then he later conquered Europe!
– In 21 years Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs, but he struck out 1,330 times. He struck out nearly twice as often as he hit a home run.
– The famous novelist John Creasey received 753 rejection slips before he published 564 books.
– Rowland Hussey Macy failed seven times at retailing before starting Macy’s department store.
Notice anything about these good, bad, and ugly scenarios? Regardless of the challenges each of these successful people faced to get to the “good”, they took their “bad” or “ugly” situations as lessons and inspirations to get to where they wanted to be. They were people who fell down, but they got right back up again and kept going. They created their own path and they never quit. Ever. They took everything they were given and used it for their good. They saw each situation as an opportunity that could change their life and their perception of it.
Now, it’s your turn to do the same with every situation you encounter. As host and executive producer Larry Wilmore realized: don’t view the things that happen to you in life as as a series of “fall backs” but rather, as series of “leap forwards.” Find opportunity in them all.
