When you’re growing up, kids can be so cruel.

Most of the time, they don’t even think about how their words and actions can really hurt, especially when they publicly humiliate you. That seemed to be the case for students at Holy Trinity Regional High School in Newfoundland when they created a new form of mock awards. They started a poll on the Straw Poll website to invite people to rank who they considered to be the ugliest girls in school.

After senior Lynelle Cantwell learned her name on the list, she told Buzzfeed that she was sadden by the cyberbullying. “I saw that I was fourth and I was like, ‘wow.’ I felt hurt, like really really hurt. Not gonna lie, it tore me apart a little bit.”

But Cantewell did not let it get the best of her. Instead, she had the most epic response. She posted a thoughtful message to her bullies on Facebook, and it went viral pretty instantaneously.

Let her response remind you that you can always rise above your haters. Here’s some of it: “I’m sorry that your life is so miserable that you have to try to bring others down…I may not look okay on the outside,” she continued. “But I’m funny, nice, kind, down to earth, not judgmental, accepting, helpful, and I’m super easy to talk to. That’s the same for every other girl on that list that you all put down. Just because we don’t look perfect on the outside does not mean we are ugly. If that’s your idea of ugly, then I feel sorry for you.” You can read the full message here:

After receiving much attention, Cantwell received many applauds and media outlets around the world covered the story. Here was her refreshing response to the attention:

I want everyone to know i appreciate all of the gifts and the attention i have received. However, what we are fighting…
