Another Complaint About TV Shows! How About A Thank You?

Nowadays, television is everything that we love and complain about… at the same time.

For Black America, there are many options when it comes to programming. Black Entertainment Television (BET) has become one of the nation’s only networks providing a platform to highlight African-American culture. Among other Black cable channels, it continually fights for the attention of Black America.

But over the past few years, the network has struggled to produce original and inspiring programming accepted by their peers.

I mean did anyone really enjoy Hell Date? How about Frankie & Neffe? I feel bad for Debra Lee, because she holds the weight of the world on her shoulders. BET has positioned itself to be an expert on Blackness, and as a result they hold a high level of social responsibility to our community. I’ve given them the benefit of the doubt time and time again, yet they have no idea what my Blackness is all about.

I’m jealous of those who were teenagers or young adults in the 90’s. Where is my version of Living Single, Sister Sister, and A Different World? Black programming boomed in the 90’s, but nowadays it’s fallen off. Way off.

But instead of continuing to complain for another 100 words about the issue, followed by no action, I wanted to take the time to say thank you.

To the minority writers, producers, and actors out there, thank you. Thank you for noticing a void in our community and doing something about it. You didn’t wait for Hollywood to call. You got out there and created your own web series that specifically targeted us. The number of clicks and views on Youtube clearly show we’re hooked. We’re quick to criticize when we don’t like something, thus I wanted to say thank you.

Thank you for putting in the time and effort so I could have something entertaining and uplifting to watch. The quality of your content is appreciated. Thank you Black and Sexy TV for restoring my faith in black love with your series The Couple. Thank you Issa Rae for encouraging me to find comfort in my awkwardness (Congratulations on your new deal with Shonda Rhimes and ABC).

Ideally, I’d love to see the content on TV.

However, if the internet is our platform then so be it. I’m proud of all you for taking things in a different direction, because there’s only so much Basketball Wives I can watch.

I look forward to what the future holds for all of you.
