The University of Kentucky Men’s basketball team’s perfect ending in the final four, 71-64, is the true giant of college basketball.
They dominated the regular season and after the opening weekend of the NCAA College Basketball Tournament, they have now beaten the Moutaineers of West Virginia University 78-39.
Coach Calipari has created a true juggernaut of a team, with 9 Mcdonald’s All-Americans on the Wildcat roster, led by star big-man Karl-Anthony Towns, who is a big presence in the middle for Kentucky along with Junior center Willie Cauley-Stein, who has taken full advantage of Towns’s presence. With those two Kentucky’s defense is very hard to beat. The Wildcats are number one in overall defense in the tournament. The Wildcats have not lost a game since last year’s championship game against the University of Connecticut.
The last team to have a perfect season and cap it off with a title was the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers led by legendary coach Robert Knight. College basketball fans have been teased with a team potentially going undefeated before. Last year, the Wichita State University Men’s basketball team went into the tournament undefeated and eventually lost to the Wildcats.
Undefeated teams just do not happen in this day and age and the way Kentucky plays basketball now is not pretty, but if you are a fan of defense and teams that play Memphis Grizzlies style of basketball Kentucky might be your team. They are the perennial favorite to win this year.
By far, Kentucky is the best team in the tournament.
The only teams that I could have seen give Kentucky a run for their money are the Wisconsin Badgers.
