Yes, all of those.

Sometimes you feel like you’re on top of the world. Other times, you feel like the world is on top of you.

As much as we thought we knew what we were getting into before stepping into the real world, most of us kind of had a huge wake-up call. So… to make the transition a little easier for you, we’re offering you 20 pieces of advice that we wish we were given before entering the ‘working world.’

We’re not saying that you have to take all of our advice, but it’s good to be aware of things before getting started in them. Don’t you agree?

So on that note, here’s 20 pieces of advice you need before entering the working world:

1. You’re going to make a ton of mistakes. Don’t shy away from them. Admit them learn from them and move on.

2. Don’t hide behind your degree. A lot of people have degrees. Your work ethic will set you apart, not the prestige of your institution.

3. Kindness goes a long way. So many doors will open for you if you’re a pleasure to work with.

4. Walk in humility. No matter how much you think you’ve arrived, you’ve still got a long way to go.

5. Succeed! You’ve got everything you need already inside of you to succeed. Experience just draws it all out of you. Be encouraged as you journey.

6. Focus on you. Don’t look to the side at what others are doing/accomplishing. Look ahead and focus on your goals. You can do it!

7. Dress for the job you want. Not the one you have. Sign up for coupon apps and cards that you don’t have to pay for; shop at resale shops. You can always find clothing within your budget.

8. Don’t stop learning. Whatever your field find opportunities for learning.

9. Set goals- seriously. They will help you aim for where you want to be in your career and achieve them but don’t get discouraged if they don’t happen at the pace you want

10. Take care of yourself. Your health and relationships shouldn’t be declining because you are working too much. If you didn’t take care of yourself in college, start now. Take vacation and leave your city if you can.

11. Invest and save. Can’t say this enough. You will need it now and in the future.

12. Maintain your credit. Don’t get unnecessary credit cards. Shred of burn anything with identifying information on it. Check your credit score once a year. Pay things off as quickly as you can.

13. Overtax… Basically, have your job “over” tax you so you can get extra back in your tax return. After you handle #12 and #11, you can try to do something just for yourself that is totally frivolous.

14. Know your relationships. Understand the difference between a work friendship and true friendship. It’s totally normal to become pals with someone from work. However, be careful as you never know what information or details of your personal life may be used for/against you in the office.

15. Never stop networking! With each and every position and place you work for there is a connection to be made. It may not be the ones you think either. Your boss and coworkers are great but also think of others down the hall and on other floors. You can learn from them as well as those you work with directly.

16. Value yourself. Starting out in the “real world”, you may feel the need to mold yourself into what others want you to be. It can be a faster way to get a job. However, you’ll quickly wish you could just be yourself. Maintain what you want in life as well as your career and please don’t sacrifice!

17. Look at your life in its entirety. When you’re in a job, consider how it can help you now and 20 years from now. Will it be a job and career that fits what you want in life overall? For example, do you want to have a family or pursue a career more? Those may be big decisions to make now and you don’t have to make them ASAP. But know that certain jobs, roles and paths will make those choices easier or harder to make.

18. Do what you love. Really figure out if what you are doing is making you happy. If not, it could be time to make a a different career move. Life is too short not to be happy.

19. Find your passions and pursue them. Whatever your passions are, they are meant for you to use and will ultimately lead you to your calling. Don’t take them for granted or think otherwise.

20. And most of all, have courage. Listen to your heart and follow your own instincts. Not everyone knows what you are supposed to do with your life, so trust yourself a little more.

That’s all we have for now 😉
