It’s the month of love, aka February, and there’s coverage everywhere about love when it comes relationships, dating, marriages, and all of the above. But I thought it might be also appropriate to write about another kind of love: self-love.

Self-love is love that you have for yourself is a love that only you can fill. Practicing self-love is not only healthy; it’s empowering. Your love for yourself immensely benefits your life, your life with your Creator, and the lives of those around you.

Whether you’re in a relationship with another person or not, you need to remember to embrace self-love and by taking care of yourself, your sanity, your soul, and most importantly, your soul. Here are eight reasons why self-love matters and why you should always embrace it:

1. It empowers you to become who you are created to be

When you love yourself, you allow yourself to truly live, to embrace yourself and to become all that you are capable of being. By realizing your own inherent value you will be able to have a greater impact on the lives of those around you.

2. It helps you see your flaws and imperfections as beautiful

Taking on the mantra of fully embracing self-love means that you are able to see all that you are and have been created to be as beautiful. What you used to see as flaws or imperfections, you love because you realize they make you, you.

3. It makes it easier to love someone else.

When you don’t love yourself, how can you truly love someone else? It would be a constant battle because you are not confident in who you are. If you choose to embrace who you truly are, it will make it easier for you to embrace others.

4. It’s how to *truly* live.

When you love yourself, you allow yourself to truly live, to embrace yourself and to become all that you are capable of being. By realizing your own inherent value you will be able to have a greater impact on the lives of those around you.

5. It makes it easier to love others.

If you don’t know how to fulfill your own needs, then how can you tell someone else how to fulfill them? If you don’t realize your own value, it makes it easier for others to miss it too.

6. It’s helps you overcome difficult moments.

When you love yourself, you can believe in yourself, especially during moments when it feels like you can’t. The way to overcome your obstacles is to genuinely work towards loving yourself and your body. When you choose yourself, you are owning your life and making the choice to overcome all things that you face.

7. If you don’t realize your own value, it makes it easier for others to miss it too.

When many of us were younger, we wanted to be “liked” so we would tolerate negative ways that people would treat us. I admit I was especially guilty of this. But the older I’ve gotten, the more, I no longer tolerate mistreatment. I believe what Oprah said, “You teach people how to treat you.” I believe for respect purposes, you cannot allow people to mistreat you. By stopping them in doing so, you are immensely showing them the self-love that you have for yourself.

8. No one can take care of you quite like you can. No one.

You are responsible for your life. You are responsible for your wellbeing. You are responsible for how you live and what you will and will not tolerate. No one else can take of you like you take care of yourself and no one else will. Period.
