No matter where you live, how old you are, or what your profession is, there’s something that’s just appealing about the carefree hippy lifestyle. Now, that doesn’t mean you have to suddenly rock dreadlocks, go vegan, and pick up hitchhikers in your classic Volkswagen Microbus to appreciate the hippy lifestyle. There are several simple ways to pay homage to the enviable laid-back vibes that hippies are all about. We all have an inner hippy, so here are some easy ways to let them shine.
1. Rediscover Free-Spirited Tunes
The heyday of the well-known Woodstock Music and Art Fair may be long over, but thanks to the many music streaming services of today, you can easily rediscover some of the classic tracks that shaped the 1960s.
Think of classic acts like Joan Baez and Arlo Guthrie who graced the stage at Woodstock, or the well-known Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and The Who. Other artists who made their stamp on that era’s music like Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, The Doors and Joni Mitchell are also great acts to discover or rediscover as you seek to break into your hippy mindset.Or, if you want a taste of how Woodstock might have been like, check out one of the many outdoor music festivals held each year!
2. Share Some Love for the Environment
Hippies were and are still known for their passion for the environment, and while you don’t have to chain yourself to a tree to align yourself with the earth, it’s easy to start small. Consider swapping out single-use plastic bottles and plastic bags for reusable options, or think about adding a small compost area to your home so organic waste isn’t, well, wasted. Alternatively, you can try your hand at gardening and make an eco-friendly garden in your yard.
Other ways you can show some love for the earth and everyone in it is by considering your eating habits. Perhaps try out a Meatless Monday or try to go vegan for one week every quarter or biannually. There are many different ways to consume less or consume in smarter ways, from food to vegan cosmetics and products sourced and made with fair trade in mind.
3. Embrace a Holistic Lifestyle
Though your lifestyle can be a laid back one, your attitude towards life and approach to it aren’t apathetic. Many who embrace this type of lifestyle care about living a natural and holistic life. Some take this to a spiritual level as well, seeking out balance, wellness and a way to feel whole. From a health perspective, many hippies will seek out alternative therapies and natural alternatives instead of just taking prescriptions given by pharmacies and doctors. Not all will immediately turn to such remedies, but consider trying to find a balance of the two. This is the approach many take, seeking out herbal supplements for a variety of reasons, from helping relieve stress to find more energy or even compliment other efforts to sleep better.
4. Bring Back Some Hippy Lingo
From “groovy” to “far out,” some of the hippy lexica includes words or phrases that iconic, but rarely used today. But just like fashion trends, popular vocabulary ebbs and flows in society, so why not be a trendsetter and bring back some of these fun and descriptive words? Try adding a couple of your favorites into your vernacular today and your inner flower power is sure to shine through!

Luckily for all you hippy wannabes out there, bohemian fashion is truly new and in style again. If you’re just starting, try incorporating a piece or two of ‘60s and ‘70s inspired clothing into your wardrobe or swap out an accessory to see how it feels.
Finding a pair of chic vintage-looking sunglasses, rocking a paisley shirt or incorporating a Southwestern-inspired free-flowing dress into your closet just may be your ticket to finding your inner hippy!
