Moving into a new house or an apartment can be an exhilarating experience, regardless of the fact whether you are buying or renting the property. Packing up and moving everything material you own is a daunting challenge. Such a large scale operation is bound to have its hiccups. Have you packed everything, separated the fragile items, will the movers arrive on time; those are just some of the questions to ask yourself. If everything goes smooth, then comes the unpacking, which can be even more complicated. That is why we have compiled a list of the 5 things you need to check right after you move. They are the prerequisite to turn your new real estate into your new home.
The move itself
Things can go wrong even before you step into your new home. In order for the move to go as smoothly as possible, make sure you label each box properly. The label should also state which room it should be carried in so you will have an easier time unpacking. When packing furniture that has to get assembled again, put all the nuts and bolts into separate bags and ducktape them to the furniture. This way, you won’t have to look around the entire house when it’s time to reinstall them. Other items of furniture and house appliances can be heavy, so place some cardboard on the parquet to protect it if the movers accidentally drop something. This goes for bathroom tiles as well.
Setting up the mail
It might seem trivial, but if the issue of mail is not settled right away, it can drag on for years. For houses, there shouldn’t be a problem since each house probably has a mailbox in front of its driveway. Apartment buildings are a whole different universe. Firstly, see if there is a mailbox downstairs or if mail is delivered through a slot on your front door. This goes for letters, but packages are a bit trickier. For instance, the mailman can leave the package at you neighbor’s door or return it to the nearest post office. You need to look at your address code to figure out which post office is this and where it is located. Finally, be sure to return to previous owners any of their mail that arrives subsequently.
Do I need an antenna?
We know what you’re thinking: cable. Yes, cable is neat, but it doesn’t confer the same range and security a roof antenna does. This is especially important if you are moving into a new house and you aren’t sure about the signal strength in your neighborhood. If you have an antenna you will not be dependent on this factor, nor will you look at the sky all the time since they operate in any weather, snow or heat. That is why antenna installations are in vogue across many housing estates.
The furniture
You are going to bring most of the furniture from the old house into the new place. However, each space has its own peculiarities and you won’t be able to fit all the pieces of furniture. This might require selling some items and buying others. Lamps and umbrella stands might be universal, but kitchen cabinets are usually custom made. It would be wise to leave them in the old apartment, thus increasing its market value. Also, when looking for a new apartment, you should always see if the new space can accommodate your most prized pieces of furniture. If you have a large leather sofa, you would want to know the dimensions of the living room to see if it will fit. By doing this before the purchase, you save yourself the trouble of worrying about these things after the move.
Cleaning
A logical thing to do, but one that many leave for later. However, this should be among the first 5 things you do once you move in. The place you are moving in cannot be anything else but utterly filthy! People have probably lived there for many years and the movers left a mess, so it is up to you clean it. Even if you are buying a new real estate, it is bound to have chips of wood or plaster and of course a lot of dust. Also, grime will be all over the place, so you have to scrub hard. Take notice of corners and seams, because these are the places where muck accumulates the most. Rooms that need special sanitary care are the bathroom and the kitchen.
These 5 steps are rather simple but essential. They should be done immediately upon entering a new space in order to make it a true family home.
