23 Things I Wish Someone Would Have Told Me At 23

There are so many things that I wish someone would have told me when I was 23. But these are definitely ones that I wish someone would have told me the most:

1. Have fun and enjoy your twenties.

It really is the best time of your life. Try things you never have tried. Travel. Work hard and take care of yourself, but have fun too. You will appreciate having a variety of experiences to look back on and talk about later.

2. Aim to achieve big dreams.

Some people along your career will tell you what is possible and what is not. Don’t let their limitations define yours. You’ll be surprised in witnessing your dreams coming true simply because you believed that they could.

3. Plan to do some things that scare you.

It’s the only way to truly live. You can’t color in the lines all the time. You can’t always play it safe. Try things that scare you.

4. Time really does fly by.

It only gets faster as you get older. That’s why it’s so important to plan and to decide who it is that you want to be. Then, start taking the steps to get there.

5. Move on from jobs that you hate.

Yes, we all have to pay our dues, but it’s not worth your stress to be stuck in a job that you hate waking up to go to every single day. Don’t stop looking until you find your passion. Happiness and having peace of mind is worth everything.

6. Be selective about your friends.

As you get older, you’ll realize you don’t need to put up with people. If they are not making your life better or fuller, then you don’t need to spend time with them. It’s that simple.

7. Not everything they teach you in school is applicable to the real world.

Harsh reality, I know. But the way your college professors describe the world is not always how it works. Do not take their word for it. You’ll learn things for yourself as you go.

8. Learn that you have to live your own life.

You may try to live your life based on what worked for someone else. But these may not always work for you. Embrace who you are and the way you want to live. Set your own path.

9. Don’t let other people’s ideas or expectations define you.

Your parents, your siblings, your friends, and everyone in between may try to tell you how to live your life. But as an adult, you don’t have to live up to their expectations. Have your own.

10. Stop making people a priority when they only make you their option.

This is especially applicable for relationships. You will eventually meet someone who treats you the way you want to be treated. Don’t feel like you have to put up with anything else.

11. There is really no set path to anything.

The world today should show you that the rules of yesterday are all at the window. With technology now, anything is REALLY possible. You can get to where you want to be in different ways. Do what works for you.

12. Rejection will always be apart of life.

It sucks and hurts, but it builds your character. It toughens you; it makes you more determine to fulfill your goals; and most importantly, it builds humility which is trait we all need.

13. Embrace what you believe to your imperfections.

You will discover that it is your “flaws” that make you beautiful and who you are. Love them.

14. Exercise regularly.

Exercising is not only good for staying in shape, but as you get older, you’ll discover that it’s really good for stress relief, venting, and thinking.

15. Start saving, even if a little at a time.

It will add up overtime and it will not make you panic during emergencies.

16. Everything always works itself out.

When you are going through something, it’s hard to believe this, but everything will always work itself out. Everything always happens for a reason and for your good.

17. Even if people are cold and bitter, you don’t have to be.

I used to feel like I had to be cold or bitter to be taken seriously, to stand up for myself, or to get respect. But I’ve realized, I don’t need to waste my energy trying to level up to people. Don’t let other people’s misery become your own.

18. Trust your gut…always.

It is always right. We just sometimes refuse to believe it or we second guess it. Learn to continuously trust it. You will be happy that you did.

19. Just because someone is your boss, doesn’t mean anything.

I have found many of my bosses really don’t know how to manage people. They were put in a managerial role, but lack the skills. Don’t take everything they say seriously.

20. You can create the world that you want to live in.

Most people just live. They don’t actually go for their dreams or experience life to its fullest. Don’t be one of those people. Use your life towards something greater than you.

21. Change is always good.

I used to like change. Then, I hated change because it was scary. But now, I embrace. I’ve realized everything always works out. There’s no need to stress about everything.

22. You have to believe in yourself.

In life, you have to be your greatest advocate. Sometimes life gets tough. People are mean. Following dreams is hard, but never give up yourself. Never.

23. Remember, you only get one life.

This is it. Make the most of it.
